FAQs about orthodontics
What is orthodontics?
Orthodontics is a specialist area of dentistry that focuses on straightening teeth and aligning jaws. Combined, this helps to correct or improve a patient’s overall facial profile.
What is the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist?
An orthodontist is a dentist who has chosen to specialise in this area of dentistry. To do so, they have embarked on a further two-to-three years of postgraduate training. An orthodontist focuses mainly on correcting the position of your teeth, rather than day-to-day maintenance such as fillings.
Does it hurt to have braces?
No, braces don’t hurt. When they are first placed, and during your treatment when they are tightened, this can cause your teeth to become tender and slightly uncomfortable, but this will only last for a day or two and can be treated with over-the-counter pain relief.
How do I know if I need braces?
For optimum oral hygiene and care it is recommended that you see your dentist at least once a year. They will be able to assess your teeth and advise whether or not you need braces. However, you don’t need a dentist’s referral to see an orthodontist. If you are concerned about your teeth, or suffer from a common orthodontic problem, you can book a free consultation with us and we can talk you through your treatment options.
Can anyone wear braces?
Yes, orthodontic treatment is for everyone – children, teenagers and adults. And at Eden Orthodontics, we have teeth straightening treatment options that are suitable, whatever your age. We really do believe no-one is too old for orthodontic treatment.
How much do braces cost?
The cost of braces depends on a couple of factors. Firstly, what treatment is recommended to you, as different braces cost different amounts. Secondly, how long your treatment lasts. We do have a treatment fees guide on our cost and finance page, as well as information on payment plans which we hope helps to make orthodontic treatment affordable to everyone.
I’ve heard about Invisalign. What is that?
Invisalign is an innovative orthodontic treatment method that uses clear plastic aligners to move teeth, rather than the brackets and archwire method of traditional metal braces. You can find out more about Invisalign on our Invisalign FAQ page.
Is it true I can only eat soft foods while wearing braces?
There are some foods you’ll need to avoid when wearing braces but on the whole, your diet isn’t likely to change very much while you’re wearing braces. The main thing to remember is that if you damage your braces, this can affect the length of your treatment time. When we fit you with braces, we’ll let you know what is best to eat and what you should avoid, like hard boiled sweets, chewing gum and sugary drinks!
