Your first appointment
Stepping into the orthodontist’s clinic for the first time can be a nerve-wracking experience, but it doesn’t have to be. Here’s what happens during your first appointment.
Your orthodontic treatment journey to a brand new smile begins with an initial consultation. At this appointment, you’ll meet with our specialist orthodontist, Dr Rachel Smith. This is an opportunity for you to find out exactly how you could benefit from treatment and a chance for Dr Smith to understand what you want your treatment to achieve.
X-rays and photos of your teeth will be taken to allow Dr Smith to make a full assessment of your orthodontic requirements. She’ll then provide you with a treatment plan outlining the type of braces she thinks you’ll most benefit from, whether that be traditional metal braces, clear ceramic braces, lingual braces or Invisalign. This treatment plan will also include the estimated length of treatment time and cost.
Once you have decided to go ahead with orthodontic treatment, the next step is to come in for your fitting appointment. This is the day you’ll have your braces fitted, or, if you've chosen Invisalign treatment, the day you’ll be issued with your virtually invisible aligners.
This appointment will be one of the longer ones you have with us, lasting around one hour. The fitting of your braces won’t hurt, but your teeth are likely to be a little tender for a few days. We’ll advise you on the best foods to eat while your teeth get accustomed to your braces, how to clean them and how to manage any discomfort you may have.
