Will My Teeth Move Back If I Don’t Wear My Retainer?

If you’ve recently completed treatment with braces or clear aligners, you’re likely enjoying your new smile – and wondering how to keep it looking that way. The answer is retention. Retainers are designed to hold your teeth in their new positions as the supporting bone and gums settle. Without them, teeth can gradually shift back. The good news? With the right retainer and a few easy habits, you can keep your results stable for the long term.

Will my teeth move back if I don’t wear my retainer?

In short – yes, they can. Teeth are held in place by gum fibres and surrounding bone that take time to stabilise after treatment. These tissues still “remember” their old positions and may gently pull teeth back over time. Even a few missed nights without your retainer can lead to movement, especially in the early months.

If you’ve skipped a night or two and your retainer still fits snugly, wear it as normal. If it feels tight or doesn’t seat properly, don’t force it. Contact us so we can assess your alignment and advise next steps.

Why teeth shift after orthodontic treatment

  • Soft tissue memory – Gum fibres stretch during treatment and can try to return to their original position.
  • Bone remodelling – Bone changes slowly, and continues adapting to your new tooth positions even after treatment ends.
  • Daily pressures – Everyday habits like chewing, clenching or tongue movement apply small forces that add up over time.
  • Ageing and growth – The jaw and face change naturally with age, and mild lower front crowding is common, even without previous treatment.

Retention isn’t just a short-term phase – it’s a lifelong habit to protect your results. The routine gets easier over time, but consistency is key!

Types of retainers

There are two main types of retainers: fixed and removable. Many patients use a combination of both for the best long-term results.

Fixed (bonded) retainers

These are slim, custom wires attached to the back of your teeth – usually the lower and sometimes upper front teeth. They’re invisible when you smile and work 24/7.

Pros: No need to remember to wear them, discreet, and highly effective for preventing relapse.

Things to note: Daily cleaning with floss threaders or interdental brushes is important. See your dentist for regular checks. If the wire loosens, contact us to repair it promptly.

Many of our patients use a removable retainer at night as an added safeguard.

Removable retainers

These come in two main designs:

Clear retainers – Similar in look to clear aligners, these transparent trays are discreet, comfortable and easy to wear.

Hawley retainers – Made of an acrylic base and fine metal wire, these are durable and adjustable over time.

Pros: Easy to clean, simple to replace, and removable for meals and special occasions.

Things to note: They only work when worn consistently – particularly during the first year after treatment.

If you liked your clear aligner experience, a clear removable retainer may feel familiar. If you prefer a more durable option, a Hawley may be best.

How often should I wear a removable retainer?

Your Specialist Orthodontist will personalise your plan, but most patients wear them full-time for a few weeks, then at night long-term. If your retainer feels tight after skipping a night, that’s your sign to wear it more consistently.

Tips for remembering your retainer

  • Pair it with your brushing routine.
  • Keep a labelled case nearby – never wrap retainers in tissues!
  • Use gentle reminders like phone alarms until it becomes a habit.
  • Rinse with cool water and clean regularly with a soft toothbrush or mild cleaner.
  • Travelling? Pack your retainer in your carry-on and bring a backup if advised.

Haven’t worn your retainer in a while?

Try it carefully. If it still fits, resume wear. If it doesn’t fit or causes discomfort, stop and book a review with us. We may be able to create a new retainer or recommend a short course of realignment.
